Years ago, special-needs children were locked away in institutions with little hope for the future. Today, we know that they can be reached, educated and even live a completely normal life. The secret is early intervention.
Sulam Special Education Center, the oldest and largest therapeutic education program in Israel, is now opening a seventh branch to bring the benefits of early intervention to the special-needs children of Telsstone, a tree-lined community located 15 kilometers west of Jerusalem.
Notwithstanding its population of nearly 2,000 school-aged children, Telsstone lacks any special-education facility. The municipality has appealed to Sulam to open one, offering facilities. Sulam is now turning to its friends around the world to equip the first kindergarten classroom and occupational, music and speech therapy rooms.
