Our History

Sulam began in 1981 when Mrs Faigy Ernster accepted a child with special needs into her private playgroup. Soon after she began to receive requests from more parents of children with special needs and she realized a more specialized framework was needed. She began the process of hiring professional staff and acquiring the various permits and licenses necessary.

From a small playgroup run by a woman with a great heart, Sulam has grown into a leading network of schools and therapeutic centers which stand at the head of special education in Israel.

Sulam currently has twelve branches, with 620 professional staff members, and 20 volunteers, servicing over 530 children aged 6 months – 17 years.

Students with a range of challenges benefit from our programs. This includes intellectual and learning disabilities, motor dysfunction, emotional and developmental delays, Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) and combinations thereof.

Our Mission

We believe that every person has a place and a contribution to make to society. Our mission is to enable children with disabilities to achieve their maximum functioning potential, the ultimate goal being successful integration into society.

To achieve this goal Sulam works in the following manner:

 

Evaluation

The children undergo intensive and comprehensive evaluation after which an individual therapy program is set up. Progress is evaluated three times a year.

Therapy

Each child receives their individual program.
Therapies offered include speech and language development, physical, music, art, sport, DIR Floortime, and ABA.

Inclusion

Students with disabilities share activities and learn together with students without disabilities. They learn social skills and their confidence is boosted.

 

Advocacy

Sulam supports parents in lobbying for change in laws and attitudes, in order to be able to offer more services for their children with disabilities.

 

Support

Parents receive the tools and information they need to help their children progress. Sulam provides one to one guidance, as well as quarterly support groups.

Parents as Partners

Open communication between parents and educators is crucial to the children’s success.

Sulam’s employs over 600 professional staff members including certified Special Education Experts, Speech and Language Pathologists, Occupational and Physical Therapists, Therapists specially trained in DIR Floortime, Licensed Certified Social Workers, and Psychologists as well as Para-Professionals.

Sulam is committed to the professional development of our staff, encourages their continued education and provides quarterly staff training days.

Additionally Sulam has a team of over 20 full time and many more part time volunteers, including those doing their National Service ( Sherut Liumi)

Sulam has an overall Management Board that comprises of three trustees and is registered as a nonprofit in Israel as well as in the United States, Switzerland and England. The board meets four times a year to discuss all budget and capital development plans. The heads of each department meet with their staff regularly to discuss overall progress and report back to the Head of Sulam. The Chief Executive of Sulam meets with department directors bi-monthly to discuss progress and presents reports to the Trustees on a regular basis.

All of our educators combine professionalism, experience, expertise, dedication, love and warmth to bring out the best in every student in their care.
